After staying our first few nights with friends in Auckland, 88 Lodge was our base of choice to explore the beauty of Northland & the Bay of Islands. TripAdvisor reviews formed the basis of all my extensive pre-trip research for not only accommodation but cruises and restaurants, and I recommend this method to anyone planning a night out or a holiday. Having said that - all my dealings with Geoff & Chris from the very first enquiry met with prompt, polite and personal response, which proved to be typical of their hospitality. Email correspondence filled me in on local details not available otherwise and greatly assisted in making our itinerary workable. Everything I read was borne out, from the comfort and good taste of the accommodation to the quality of the wonderful breakfasts and friendly company. These guys are good at what they do and obviously love doing it, and we can't think of any way in which we could have felt more at home. One restaurant which didn't appear on TripAdvisor (hence not on my list) was recommended for our first night, which just happened to be the evening Ake Ake Vinyard Restaurant was serving tapas for the second week. It was a terrific dining experience (the first of many in NZ) including the complete power blackout due to the stormy weather ! 88 Lodge will definitely be our first choice on any future trip to Northland, and Kerikeri is a truly lovely place filled with interesting things to do. We wouldn't mind living there ! |
