Experience the grace and charm of yesteryear, while enjoying the fine food and wine of NZ today. Revel in the peace of countrylife, but still be close to sights and activities. Welcome to Kawatea, an historic Edwardian homestead set in spacious gardens, and surrounded by land farmed by our Irish ancestors since the 1850s. Built in 1900 from native timbers the house features stained glass windows and handcrafted furniture, and has been carefully renovated to add light and space without losing its original charm. Linger over your choice of breakfast in the garden conservatory. Join us for summer barbeques on the expansive verandahs, savouring seafood from the Bay, and creative country fare from our garden and farm. On cooler evenings gather around the dining table by the fire, sharing experiences with fellow travellers. Participate in seasonal farm activities, feed the pet sheep or wander our 1400 acre hillside farm, climbing to enjoy a panoramic view of Banks Peninsula. Enjoy Okains Bay's unspoilt swimming beach, observe the birdlife on the estuary, or walk along the scenic coastline to secluded bays and a seal colony with excellent photographic opportunities. Learn about Maori culture and the life of early settlers at the acclaimed Okains Bay Museum. Explore Akaroa, with its strong French influence, visit art galleries and craft shops. Golf, kayak, take a harbour cruise, swim with the rare Hector's Dolphin, sample local wines and watch traditional cheeses being made. We have been providing farmstays since 1988, and offer thoughtful personal attention and friendly hospitality in a relaxed atmosphere. Directions: Take Highway 75 from Christchurch through Duvauchelle. Turn left at signpost marked Okains Bay. Drive to the top of the Bay - we are 6km downhill on the right.
