A warm welcome to our special house awaits from John and Jenny Jarvis .
Portland House proudly stands half way between Ross on Wye to the North (5 miles) and Monmouth to the South (3 miles); surrounded by wonderful scenery and history in an area of outstanding natural beauty; and adjacent to the famous Symonds Yat Rock on the outskirts of the Forest of Dean. 5 mins from river wye, voted best river in England and Wales. Plenty nearby to do, walking, cycling, golfing, canoeing or just plain relaxing. Our house, Grade 11 listed, has a wealth of character and charm and fascinating history; the oldest part of the house is Georgian (1676) - not overly large but spacious enough for guests to feel relaxed and comfortable, and especially cosy during the autumn and winter months. You can relax in the interesting garden or play crazy croquet, and enjoy the very attractive lounge and the elegant dining room and our wonderful 3 course breakfasts with genuinely home made offerings, like AGA baked muesli, bread and preserves.
For the romantics amongst you, The Monmouth Suite, has recently been refurbished and has its own 4 poster bed built on site with a Victorian bathroom complete with a black chandelier.
Besides this we have other spacious bedrooms like the Magnolia Room (double), overlooking our Magnolia Tree, The Doward Room, (Twin) overlooking the Doward alongside Symonds Yat, and the Marstow Room, (double) overlooking farmland at the rear. Both Magnolai and Doward have been refurbished to a very high standard this year.
For wheelchair users and people with limited mobility - The Lloyd Suite, just off the ground floor hallway, has been awarded a M2 level rating for accessibility for the disabled by the English Tourism Council.
The Lloyd Suite also has a small conservatory leading from the bedroom and overlooks the garden. A special place to relax. The large ensuite bathroom is equipped with toiletf or the disabled, shower area and wall seat as well as a spacious bath
The RossFamily Suite on the second floor has two adjoining bedrooms to accommodate a family of 5-6, sharing an ensuite and looks onto the Doward. The suite is equipped with TV and DVD as well as traditional past times such as chess and family games as well as a doll’s house.
Our Guest House has been graded as 4 stars by the AA and has been awarded a Green Business Award and Wildlife Action Award. Graded 5 stars for food hygiene management. We have a dog called Jess who writes our newsletter, but she's fed up with doing that so she's starting her blog. Wait for it!
We are uniquely placed in the Wye Valley just within Herefordshire and near to the borders of Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire in an area of outstanding natural beauty, so there is plenty of glorious countryside to enjoy however our garden is also available to our guests for a relaxing few moments or for playing crazy croquet during your stay. Free WiFi.
Ross on Wye and Monmouth are both reached by car within 8.5 minutes.E ach town can also be reached by a Stagecoach bus, with lowering facilities, the service being every 2 hours. And the local bus stops virtually outside the front gates of Portland House.
